Our Community

NEW YORK MILLS

New York Mills once a logging outpost on the Northern Pacific railroad has survived the test of time and become a thriving community based on modern business, agriculture, industry and recreation. There are 1100 of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes within easy driving distance of New York Mills.

Starting with 300 people when incorporated in 1884, New York Mills has seen steady growth over the past 123 years claiming over 1100 residents today. But more importantly the community is home to many different jobs. More jobs than residents!

In fact, people drive many miles to work in the community’s industries. For well over 50 years the Lund Boat Company has been the towns major employer as they produce the “World’s Finest Fishing Boat” that is marketed throughout the United States and Canada. Today New York Mills is proud of its diversified manufacturing base, which has lead to high employment and great jobs for people in the area.

A young energetic community, New York Mills has moved ahead with the development of a dynamic Commercial Park, which has become home to several thriving businesses. The community stands ready to invite local businesses to expand and grow as well as invite new businesses to join in the positive atmosphere of New York Mills.

While the business community has grown, so has the service community with the Elders’ Home and Heritage Manor, assisted living facility to meet the needs of the aged. The Merit Care Clinic supplies a host of medical services for New York Mills.

The community has also focused on its’ quality of life. Called one of the country’s best small towns for the arts, New York Mills is home to the nationally recognized Regional Cultural Center. The Regional Cultural Center sponsors ongoing art exhibits and entertainment, and is the site of the “Great American Think Off” which has been broadcast live on C-SPAN.

The schools in New York Mills are about as “good as they get!” The district has a new high school, renovated the elementary school and just finished a huge addition which features a, state of the art, 550-seat theatre, new media centers and computer centers as well as more classroom and support space.

All in all it has been great for New York Mills. Starting as a pioneer logging camp and developing into a dynamic positive place to live, work and retire.
