Our History

The Heart of the Lakes Credit Union started in 1942 as the New York Mills and Heinola Credit Union. The Credit Union was located in the Co-op store in New York Mills at that time.

In 1976, the Credit Union changed its name to the Mills Community Credit Union and was moved to Centennial Drive into what was the old barber shop across from what is now Homestead Building Supplies.

The Credit Union relocated to the Centennial building on Main Avenue in 1983. The Credit Union expanded in 1985 and added an office in Perham at 650 3rd Avenue SE. At this time the name was changed to the East Otter Tail Credit Union.

The New York Mills office built a new facility in 1997 on the corner of Main Avenue and Park Street.
In Dec. 2002 a new branch office was built in Perham at 108 Judd Street.

At our annual meeting held in Feb. 2005 the Credit Unions name was changed to Heart of the Lakes Credit Union to better reflect the greater trade area that we are now serving. With 1000 of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes within 25 miles of our offices it made good sense for the name change.

Over the years the Heart of the Lakes Credit Union has grown to having over 3800 members and a full line of financial services.

Look to the Heart of the Lakes Credit Union in New York Mills and Perham for all your financial services needs.
